How to check if ChatGPT recommends your business

More customers now ask an AI assistant before they search. Here is how to see whether it names your business, why it may not, and what usually helps.

1. Ask like a customer who does not know you

Do not ask "Is [your business] good?": the assistant will find you by name. Ask the question a new customer would type, with your area: "Where can I order a birthday cake in Haeundae?" or "Who can fix a leaking pipe tonight in Austin?"

Write down five to ten such questions, in the words your customers use.

2. Ask more than once, in more than one assistant

Answers change from one try to the next. In our tests, asking the same 15 questions twice changed up to 3 of the answers, so one answer proves nothing either way.

Assistants also read different sources: ChatGPT search leans on Bing, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews on Google, Claude on Brave Search. One can name you while another does not.

3. Look at what the answer read

Open the sources under the answer. Map listings, review sites, local blogs and "best of" lists come up again and again: that is where the assistant learns about businesses like yours. If your competitors are named, check where they appear that you do not.

4. What usually helps

Be findable: add your site to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Say plainly on your site what you do, where, for whom, with prices and opening hours. Keep the listings assistants read complete (Google Business Profile, and Naver Place, Yelp or Tabelog where your customers use them). Ask every customer for a review. Get mentioned on the sites the answers cite.

There is no way to submit your business to an AI assistant or to buy a place inside its answer. Be careful with anyone who promises one.

5. Checking every week without doing it by hand

Cashbell asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude your customers' questions every week, shows who they recommend instead and which sites they read, and tells you what to do next. The first check is free and needs no signup.

Questions owners ask

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

No. Where assistants show ads, they are labelled and kept apart from the answer; a place in the answer itself cannot be bought.

How long until changes show up?

Search engines take days to weeks to read changed pages, and AI answers follow after that. Compare week by week over a month or more, not day by day.

Why does it recommend a competitor instead?

Usually because the competitor is mentioned more often on the sites the answer read: reviews, maps and lists. Look at the sources to see which ones.
